Purchasing Life Insurance While Taking Lisinopril or another High Blood Pressure Medication

Obtaining a great life insurance rate while being treated for hypertension just became easier.  Whether you are currently taking Lisinopril (Prinivil), Amlodipine besylate (Norvasc), a water pill or any other medication for hypertension you still may qualify for the best possible rate class.  Hypertension or (high blood pressure) is one of the most common health concerns I encounter when quoting someone for life insurance.  And Lisinopril (Prinivil) is one of America’s most prescribed medications and a common treatment for high blood pressure.  According to the CDC, as many as 1 in 3 adults in the United States have hypertension, which increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, some of the primary causes of death in our country.

Hypertension is often called a “silent killer” because it often doesn’t have any warning signs or symptoms, and people do not realize they have it.

The good news is that you may still qualify for the best rate class, Preferred Plus, if you are being treated for hypertension and if you would otherwise qualify.  For example, a well know A+ rated life insurance company with AM Best, recently updated their underwriting guidelines to include that you can remain eligible for their best rate class if you are being treated for hypertension, as long as your average blood pressure reading from the current medical exam and history readings within the last year do not exceed 135 over 85 up to age 60, or 140 over 85 for ages 61-70. Also, your treated blood pressure must have been controlled for one year with favorable APS readings throughout the year.

That is incredible news and could potentially save the client a ton of money!

Other companies can still offer the best rate class if you would otherwise qualify, as long as the hypertension is currently well controlled for two years with the average readings not exceeding certain readings.

However, for most companies the second best rating class, Preferred, will remain the best rate class that you are eligible for if you are or have been treated for hypertension.  Also, remember that your rate is determined by many other factors, such as your build and other health and lifestyle conditions. That is why it is important to speak with a knowledgeable insurance agent who is also an independent agent, so they can look at many companies to find you the best rate for you particular situation.
